Tree Pruning Preston Healthy, Natural Shape
Is your tree getting too big or starting to look untidy? Our arborists are tree pruning specialists. We reduce, lift and thin trees so they let in more light, sit further from the house and stay safe, while keeping a natural shape rather than leaving ugly stubs of branches.
Good pruning is about knowing where to cut and how much to take. Done well, a tree recovers quickly and looks as if it was always that size.
Tree Pruning Services We Offer
Every tree and every garden is different, so we look at the species, its health and what you want to achieve before we recommend anything. These are the most common types of pruning we carry out for homeowners and businesses in Preston and the towns around it.
Crown Reduction
Reducing the height and spread of the crown by cutting branches back to suitable growth points, so the tree is smaller and lighter.
It keeps its natural outline, which makes this the usual answer for a tree that has outgrown the garden.
Crown Lifting
Removing the lowest branches to raise the canopy, giving clearance over lawns, paths, drives and roads.
More light reaches the ground and the house, so it is a quick way to open up a shaded garden without losing the tree.
Crown Thinning
Taking out a proportion of smaller branches throughout the crown, so more light and wind pass through.
The tree's size and shape stay the same, and a large tree catches less wind in a storm.
Deadwooding
Removing dead, dying and broken branches that could fall onto people, cars or roofs below.
It is one of the simplest ways to make a mature tree safer, and is often done alongside other pruning on the same visit.
Reshaping
Bringing an overgrown, lopsided or badly pruned tree back into balance, often over more than one visit so the tree isn't stressed.
We keep the shape natural and never simply top a tree, which only causes problems later.
Pruning Near Buildings
Cutting back branches that touch roofs, gutters, walls, windows or overhead cables, before they cause damage.
Branches against a building can lift tiles and block gutters. We tidy away every cutting when we finish.

Pruning in Practice
Fast-growing trees such as willows can double in size in a few years and soon dominate a garden, blocking light and dropping branches. Regular pruning keeps them in proportion with the space around them.
We work out how much the tree can take in one go, reduce the crown evenly, remove crossing and dead branches, and leave a balanced shape that will grow back well. The cuttings are cleared away and the garden is left tidy.
When Is the Best Time to Prune?
Most trees can be pruned at any time of year, but timing helps. Many broadleaf trees are easiest to assess and prune in late autumn and winter, when the leaves have dropped and the branch structure is clear. Birch and walnut bleed sap if cut in late winter and spring, so they are better pruned in late summer or autumn, and cherries and plums are best pruned in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease.
Nesting birds are protected by law, so work in spring and early summer may need a check first. We'll suggest the right time for your tree when we quote.
